In the maker’s studio

My little studio is a cozy extension of my home, where you might find me behind the wheel in the corner creating all manner of things. In the opposite corner stands my kiln which tirelessly forges all my wares. Glazing takes place in another corner of the studio, while the wedging, weighing and handbuilding unfold in the final corner.  When the kiln is emptied, the lukewarm pieces often go straight into the back shelves where I store my clay – completing the circuit.

Diane Horn has been creating pottery since 2001.

“I am constantly inspired by the thought that I have been created to create. When I take a raw material and make it into something beautiful that was designed for a purpose, I am imitating and reflecting how God has created each of us. The relationship between the potter and the clay continues to teach me new lessons all the time as I am being molded by my Creator. The name, Made Maker, reminds me of this beautiful truth.”

Mid Range Stoneware

All Made Maker pottery is made from locally developed clay bodies, ranging in color from golden wheat to deepest brick. Measures are taken to ensure the smallest possible environmental footprint.

Glazes

We make most of our glazes by hand, starting from naturally occurring elements such as silica, feldspar, calcium carbonate, zinc oxide etc. The magic happens in the kiln where these elements, in the right proportions, essentially become metamorphic rock on the surface of the clay-become-stone.

Lead-free

Only lead-free glazes are used on functional pottery. A select few decorative piece may use glazes that are not deemed food safe.

Recycling Process

Every bit of scrap left over after throwing and trimming gets added back into the recycling bin to be broken down and reworked into usable clay. This process is slow and arduous but endlessly rewarding.

Packaging

When shipping is necessary, pottery is securely packaged in only recyclable or biodegradable packing materials.

Education

Passing this ancient art form on is something we are passionate about. One apprentice is usually always in training under Diane at any given time.
